Cranbrook in Kent Town Guide

About Cranbrook in Kent

Cranbrook is a small town that exists roughly half way between Maidstone and Hastings. It is home to stunning views and filled with greenery and nature. Cranbrook has a small population of just 7,000 people.

Within Cranbrook you can find antiquated churches, museums and engaging galleries. A religious ambiance can be felt here due to the many churches, for example St Dunstan, also known as the cathedral of the weald. It is 74ft tall and also contains the prototype for the Big Ben in London.

The Museum on Carriers Road is an excellent environment to explore and learn about the evolution of Cranbrook and all of the history that is involved with this delightful town.

Another attraction that is very important to the town of Cranbrook is the Cranbrook Windmill. This is a 7 story building that in total took £3,500 to create. It was originally designed for Mary Dobell, she wanted the Windmill made for her son as she thought it was a good way to set him up for business. It is now free to visit.

In the 19th century the railway reached Cranbrook making it easily accessible to visitors, increasing the tourism.

Economically, Cranbrook took off in the 14th century when they became a cloth industry, this was their main earner of money. Wealthier clothes established the character of the town. However cloth became less requested and needed so Cranbrook turned to agriculture, so there are many fields and greenery to be seen.
